SPANISH PLAYMAKER JUAN MATA SAYS 'MANCHESTER UNITED MUST REMAIN POSITIVE' AFTER SUNDERLAND STALEMATE

The Spaniard put United in front but Jack Rodwell's equaliser means Louis van Gaal's men have just one point from their opening two matches

Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata has declared that the club must remain positive following their difficult start to the season, citing that change needs time.

Mata scored his first goal of the season as United were held to a 1-1 draw at Sunderland on Sunday, leaving them without a Premier League win under new boss Louis van Gaal after his opening two fixtures.

But the former Chelsea and Valencia star says now is a time for cool heads, as it'll take some time for United to fully adapt to what their new boss wants.

"I do think that changes need time," said Mata, writing on his personal blog. "We are talking about a new project, with a new manager and a new style.

"There is going to be a transition and that new start is more difficult if you don’t get good results.

"We would have liked to win the first two games of the season but that didn’t happen, and all we can do now is to prepare the next game, try to get the three points and start a good streak.

"We must remain positive and confident, keep working hard and get better day after day."

And Mata has also backed new £16million defender Marcos Rojo to help make a difference following his arrival from Sporting Lisbon.
"I would like to welcome him and I wish him all the best with our club," added Mata. "I believe he can contribute a lot of good things to the team as he showed, for instance, in the last World Cup with Argentina."
